Mountain Home Lawn Aeration Service

One of the most important aspects of keeping a beautiful and healthy lawn is something most people don’t know much about or just don’t think of, aeration! Lawn aeration is so important because overtime it can become difficult for your lawn to get the necessary nutrition to its soil. Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch.

What is Aeration?

Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to reach the grass roots. This can help the lawn's roots to grow deeper creating a stronger, more full looking lawn.

Aeration also helps with soil compaction. Compacted soils prevent proper circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. Built up lawn thatch can starve the roots of these vital elements.

Does Your Lawn Need Aeration?

How do you determine if you should be aerating your lawn? Here are a few considerations:

  • Does your lawn get heavy use? Children and pets running around the lawn can contribute to soil compaction.

  • Is your home newly constructed? Often, the topsoil of a new construction lot has been stripped, buried or compacted by construction equipment.

  • Does your lawn dry out easily? Does it have a spongy feel? This could mean that your grass has built-up thatch. You can check by taking a shovel and removing a slice of your lawn, digging down about 4 inches. If the thatch layer is greater than one-half inch, aeration is recommended.

  • Was your lawn installed with sod? Soil imported with your sod is likely a finer texture than your soil. This fine soil can create a layer over your existing coarse soil, disrupting drainage, with the water being held in the finer-textured soil. This can lead to compacted soil and poor root development.

When Should You Aerate Your Lawn?

The best time to aerate your lawn is during the growing season. During the growing season, your grass can heal and fill in any open areas after soil plugs are removed. The cool seasons of early spring and fall are the best time of year for aeration.
